Out in the Kitchen
Jennell is working on this fantastic project: a cookbook with families at the center, namely GLBTA families. Considering the government and some people will not recognize or respect different definitions and variations on family, it is very important that GLBTA and others are able to hold onto what they see and live everyday. Food is at the center of any family, corn-bred or punk, and why not celebrate that!

Maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate, and maybe I just don't know enough about GLBT issues to even comment. (Although, I'd like to think I'm very open minded about every lifestyle.) But isn't the GLBT community trying to bring this world together, and not segregate them even more? Wouldn't a cookbook that celebrated ALL types of families bridge that gap even more? I wouldn't purchase a cookbook that was based on GLBT families, because I'm not a member of that community But I would purchase a cookbook that celebrated food, and families of all types. Isn't the purpose of this project to spread awareness? I don't think you can do that unless everyone is represented.
I'm not trying to be a smartass, or start trouble or drama.. I'm just truly interested.
I think you missed an important letter in there. The A. In talking over this cookbook with Jennell, the Allied people were an important part. Getting people who are very out as Allies of all people GLBT is important. That is why they are included. Submissions are welcome from all types of families. I would not be suprised if there is a story or recipe in there from your typical nuclear family: mom, dad, two kids, etc. But what would be important is that that family supports the rights and equality of GLBT people and their families. I think that in this time in our country it is extremely important to bridge those gaps, and having more people become allies or identify them self as one publicly, the easier the social change becomes.
People that might be left out of this would be people who don't agree with the life that GLBT people lead. And maybe that is a problem and it is exclusive to a certain extent. But in the Civil rights movement of the 60's there were many people that did not think that desegregation should happen. There were some people with power, mostly white people, who stood by the side of the oppressed who made those voices louder and heard to a wider audience and I think helped push the issue further.
You raise a good point. But I still feel like the focus is skewed.
